A Conversation I Had With My Mom

I would love to say that my mom is technologically literate...but she's not. She tries, and I give her an A for effort, but I would really love it if she could earn the A for getting it right.

Here's a conversation we had this weekend:

Mom - "I want a picture to show up every time I comment on your blog."

Kinsey - "Do you have a picture in mind?"

Mom - "I think I have one on a photo disc upstairs."

Kinsey - "I might have one on my computer of you."

Mom - "So do you want me to get the DVD...or CD...DVD?"

Kinsey - "CD. Compact Disc. DVD. Digital Video Disc. It's a CD." (But I guess DVD stands for digital versatile disc too)

Mom - "Why do they have to use so many letters? Why can't it just be VD?"

Kinsey - "Because that stands for Venereal Disease!"

I love my mom. I love my parents, I do. But sometimes it's really hard to stay patient with them when we're dealing with technology. Although, I have to say that they almost always make me laugh :)

  1. HAHAHA. I don't know how many times I had to explain how to CUT & PASTE to my mom. We haven't even gotten as far as commenting on blogs!! ;o) VD...puhahahaha. That's really cute. I think our moms would get along.

  2. Ohhh can I just say "AMEN". Patience is trying in these situations... My mom has gotten to the point where she writes down the steps to uploading photos to facebook :) Oh, I gotta give her credit she can do most things, it just takes time. HAHA

  3. hahah so cute!! i remember when my mom finally figured out texting, and she would send me little fractions of words (usually the text was just a series of the first letters of each word she was trying to send). so i showed her t9, and she freaked out. now she sends me 2 page texts :) it's adorable.

  4. haha, so true! My mum always gets frustrated because 'the window just disappeared!' ... 'No mum, it's just been minimised. Look at the bottom.'...'I don't see anything!'... Sigh. :P

  5. LOL, my mom is 73 and trying to talk to her about technology is hilarious. I got her a cell phone (or "sell-o phone" as she calls it) and trying to explain voicemail was a nightmare.

My mother in law, who is in her mid 50's is another one ... she gave me a big speech about how if I just save my photos as .jpg files when I make discs at Target that I can play them on my tv. Have to save them as .jpg files though. I think she thought she was giving me the most amazing information.

  7. My dad is the only computer illiterate in the house and he made this statement within the last week after we belittled him about his lack of PC knowledge: I've been askin ya'll for six f***in' years to show me how!"

  8. Thats so funny! Both my parents have computer literacy in just a few areas. Email they both do great. Ask them to install a program, only my dad will get it done. Ask them to set up a wireless network, only my Mom can do it. Don't know what it is, but thankgoodness they have each other.

  9. Ok... I'm Kinsey's Mom(and proud of it:) and I'm glad to read that I fit in with so many other Moms/Dads out there:)
Let me tell you a little story. When I was growing up my Grandpa was afraid to use the telephone (fairly new to him, I guess) and when he did, he would yell into it!! Think that wasn't funny?
Now, 50 years later, the technology out there is even more amazing and not something a lot of us use everyday! It will be interesting to see what it is that you will be struggling with when you have college age children...

So, with that being said I will continue to have the little sticky notes by my computer to help me out when I need it.
And hey--isn't it great that we can get a good laugh out of it?
    Hugs, YFM

  12. LOL! But you know what the sad thing is? One day it will be the kids making fun of US for being technologically challenged.
